Commitment breakdown: Four-star Malik Agbo heads to Texas

Malik Agbo

Texas, Miami, Oklahoma and Auburn were the four finalists for Malik Agbo as all of those programs consistently recruited him even through some coaching changes and they remained high on his list throughout his recruitment.

But the Longhorns were going to be tough to beat.

The four-star offensive lineman from Federal Way (Wash.) Todd Beamer just hit it off with the Texas coaching staff, he saw an opportunity playing for coach Steve Sarkisian and position coach Kyle Flood and the rest is history.

On Wednesday, Agbo picked Texas over his other finalists - and it felt like for a while the Longhorns basically had him all locked up.

WHAT TEXAS IS GETTING

Agbo is all of 6-foot-6 and 320 pounds so he’s just a massive, barrel-chester offensive lineman who has the athleticism and light feet to play offensive tackle but could easily move inside and make a tremendous impact there as well. When we saw his 7on7 team at the Pylon event in Bullhead City, Ariz. last offseason, Agbo was willingly playing tight end for his Heir squad and looked relatively impressive moving around. He’s not going to be splitting out any time soon but for someone so big to move so well, it was interesting to see.

WHO IT HURTS

Auburn, Miami and Oklahoma were the other finalists but this doesn’t necessarily hurt any of those teams all that much because it could not have come as a major surprise to those coaching staffs that Agbo committed elsewhere.

Still, any team would want an offensive lineman as big as Agbo and so it’s definitely a miss for the Tigers, Hurricanes and Sooners but they have had other priority targets emerge as it became clear that Texas was going to be the team to beat for Agbo.

WHAT THE LONGHORNS ARE GETTING

There are two things that particularly stand out when it comes to Agbo: His athleticism and size along the offensive line and his friendly personality which should not only be a hit in the locker room but also with other recruits in the coming years. Agbo brings a lot of strong attributes to this Texas recruiting class and luckily he was open to a national approach to his recruitment, the Longhorns swooped in and got a top offensive lineman with athleticism and versatility.
